Clinical Observation in the Aged Surgical Patients

Abstract
|
|
|
As the aged population increases, surgical attention is needed on the geriatric patients. Patients with advanced age are confronted with increase in surgical risks. But old age is not a contraindication to surgery.
According to the review of the records of the patients over 65 years old or over who received operations at Chonnam University Hospital from 1981-to 1990.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1) One thousand two hundred and ninety-seven patients received operations and male to female ratio was 1.42:1.
2) Operation rate of the aged to the total operation was 10.20%.
3) Malignant disease as causes of surgery occupi8ed 29.76%, benign disease 66% and traumatic disease 4.2%.
4) One or more coexisting disease other than surgical illness were accompanied in 59.37%m Among them cardiovascular disease were most frequent.
5) Postoperative complications were developed in 18.12% and the most common ones were pulmonary complications.
6) Operative death rate was 4.70%. the significant factors affecting complication rate and death rate were multiple traumatic diseases, coexisting disease, emergent operation, electroltyte imbalance and nutritional deficiency.
